SACN — Report on Carbohydrates and Health

Q: What are Oatly’s views on the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) report on carbohydrates and health?

A: We welcomed the publication of the SACN report and appreciate its desire to help improve the health of the nation.

The report made a number of recommendations, including:

  • a reduction in average population intake of ‘free sugars,' which should not exceed 5% of total dietary energy
  • an increase in the dietary reference value (DRV) for the average population intake of dietary fibre to 30g/day for adults

In relation to the recently published report, we would like to highlight that Oatly Oat Drinks (Organic, Organic Semi, Skinny, Original and Semi):

  • contain no added sugar; all sugars present in these products are naturally occurring sugars that are inherent to the oats and produced as a result of our enzymatic production process
  • are a source of fibre and contain oat beta glucan fibre, which has been shown to lower cholesterol when eaten regularly as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle*

If you're interested in learning more, you can read the full report (here)

*High cholesterol is a risk factor for heart disease. One 250ml glass contains 1g of beta glucan, one-third of the 3g suggested daily intake of beta glucan (for lowering cholesterol).
